What can cause infertility?

Infertility is inability to conceive after 12 months of unprotected Intercourse. It could be related reasons in men and women both.

What percentage of couples are infertile?

About 80% conceive within first year of trying. 10% conceive the year later. Only about 10% remain infertile at the end of second year of trying.

What are the signs of infertility in a woman?

As such there are no signs of infertility, but certain things should be looked into carefully in case women has these
  • Excess of weight
  • Irregular period
  • Painful periods
  • Pain Intercourse
  • Excessive White discharge

How is infertility treated?

Treatment is my proper evaluation. There are multiple modalities if treatment starting with basic ovulation induction and timing the Intercourse. If this fails , then iui can be done. If iui also fails then IVF/ICSI would be the choice.

Can infertility be cured?

These days lot of new interventions have been discovered and this definitely helps in conceiving. There are always ways to treat infertility couple and achieve pregnancy.

How can I boost my fertility?

Fertility can be boosted by following proper lifestyle changes like decreasing weight and avoiding smoking and drinking in both men and women. Exercise also boost fertility in both men and women at least 40 minutes of physical activity is recommended every day.

Natural ways to boost fertility?

  • Eat healthy food
  • Eat nutritious food
  • Exercise every day
  • Avoid  junk food
  • Avoid smoking  and drinking

How will I know that am fertile?

Fertility assessment can be done by physical examination and in ultrasound examination. Most of the times people will be fertile if they are getting their cycles normally and they are in normal weight category.

How is IVF done step by step?

Initially scan is done on day three of the menstrual cycle. Hormonal  assessment is done and injections are started for a period of 10 to 12 days. Approximately about the 14 of the cycle Egg pick up is done and three days later or five days later embryos are replaced in the uterus. Pick up is done under short  general anaesthesia.The patient can get discharged the same day. Embryo transfer does not require any anaesthesia.

How long does it take from start to finish for IVF?

IVF of injections would last for about 12 days and pick up would be done on 14th to 15th day of cycle. Embryo transfer is done between 17th day to 20th day of the cycle. An early pregnancy test is done seven days after Embryo transfer and confirmation of pregnancy is done after 14 days of embryo transfer. Altogether the patient might need to stay for a period of 30 days during which only one day admission is needed for egg pick up.(collecting the egg/Egg retrieval )

Is IVF treatment painful?

We don’t believe in giving pain to our patients. IVF is not painful. Egg pick up (EGG is retrieved) is done under short general anaesthesia. Embryo transfer is fairly simple procedure which doesn’t require any anaesthesia.

What are the chances of getting pregnant with IVF?

The pregnancy rate with the cycle of IVF is about 45 to 50%

What are the chances of having twins with IUI?

The chances of having twins after IUI could be anywhere between 10 to 15%

How long does it take for fertilization after IUI?

Fertilization takes place about 48 hours after insemination and implantation takes place about three or four days later.

How is IUI procedure done?

Injections of started from Day 3 of the cycle and ultrasound monitoring of the follicles are done. When the follicle reaches the ideal size , An egg releasing injection is given and IUI procedure is done. After husband gives the semen sample , this semen is processed in the lab to get only the good motile sperms  are obtained and Inseminated.

What are the chances of getting pregnant with IUI?

Pregnancy rate with one cycle of intrauterine insemination would be about 10 to 15%. Cumulative pregnancy rate with Intrauterine insemination would be up to 35%.

What are the different types of fertility treatments?

Fertility treatments would start from basic form of treatment like the ovulation induction and follicle monitoring. If this fails then we will proceed to intrauterine insemination and if multiple cycles of intrauterine insemination fails then we will proceed to in vitro fertilization.

What is the average cost of fertility treatments?

Intrauterine insemination could cost between 10 to 15,000 and IVF  would cost about 1 1/2 lakhs.

How common is infertility?

In the first year of marriage or trying for pregnancy about 80% of the couple conceive.  In the following year another 10% would conceive. Only about 10% of the population would remain in for time even at the end of second year.

How successful are infertility treatments?

Ovulation induction and time intercourse- 6 to 8%
IUI – 10 -15 %
IVF – 45 to 50%

How does age affect woman’s fertility?

It’s plays a very important role in a woman’s fertility. Indian women do have early fertility decline as early as from 27 to 28 years. After 35 years of age the women should visit the doctor and get themselves examined. As age advances they will be decline in both the number and the quality of the egg.

What is the role of Endoscopy in Infertility?

Endoscopy plays a very important role both in the diagnosis and management of infertile couples. Laparoscopy is combined with hysteroscopy to assess the uterus, the tubes, ovaries and the relationship of this in the pelvis. Hysteroscopy is done to assess any abnormalities in the uterine cavity. If there are any abnormalities found in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy, they can be treated in the same sitting.
